DETAILED HOW TO START
1) I did the conversion on a HP Pavilion dv2202tu Entertainment PC (on sale in Australia)
2) I used a Maxon USB wireless internet modem (Telstra NextG for those in Aussie)
3) Full Retail Windows XP (then added SP2)
4) That was it !!!

You can use any net connection aslong as you burn the required driver files to disc before you start the XP install (dv2000 modem driver etc). But I didnt bother, I got ALL the files I needed AFTER I Installed XP OVER Vista, You Can DO IT!! I dont know if it works on all dv2000 series notebooks but it should, the generic drivers are the same for all of the dv2000 series notebooks as far as I can see. The ones I used look like they were, read on..
INSTALL XP on HP PAVILION dv2000 Series Notebook - DETAILS
Step 1) Disable / Turn off SATA support! XP doesnt come with the drivers required for SATA support, I had the option of turning it off in my BIOS.
Press the key when you first turn your notebook on (ESC or F1 or F10 etc etc) to access your BIOS. Simply follow the menus to turn disable your SATA support. My vista worked fine without it. (Note: you CAN get SATA support working again later, see below)
Press the key when you first turn your notebook on (ESC or F1 or F10 etc etc) to access your BIOS. Simply follow the menus to turn disable your SATA support. My vista worked fine without it. (Note: you CAN get SATA support working again later, see below)
Step 2) OPTIONAL: Only if you find you cant turn off your SATA support in BIOS then read Step 2a), if you can turn off SATA GOTO Step 3. Check to see that your notebook actually has it as a feature. But im sure most Vista PC's have it and you SHOULD be able to disable it in your BIOS, look hard!!!
2a) OPTIONAL: If you still cant disable SATA in BIOS, dont dispair!!!...do this...
----a) Download and run SATA driver exe from HP website (Link to the driver below) Ignore any error messeges, we just want the green floopy drive file that it makes on Desktop!
----b) Use winRAR or Ultimite ISO etc. to extract files from the little green Floppy drive file that the SATA Driver file creates.
----c) Place these files on a floppy or USB Flash drive. Check that the storage device you use boots before the HDD too. I dont know if this matters but better to be safe. The dv2202tu doesnt have a floppy drive, I could of used a external one but I didnt have to, re: Disable SATA above)
Step 3) While your in your BIOS, check to see that you notebook will boot from your CD/DVD ROM drive first. Try to put your HDD (Hard Drive) boot at the bottom of the list you see, after all the other disc drives etc. (but leave LAN/Network connections etc last).
STEP 4) OPTIONAL!! If you DONT think you can get your internet working again after installing XP and without adding drivers... or you want to play it safe... then do Step 4a) If your sure you CAN get your connection working then GOTO Step 5). I used a self installing USB wireless modem to connect to the internet after I installed XP, it worked fine!
4a) OPTIONAL: Download all the drivers you will need and put them on a HIGH Gb Flash Drive or burn them onto a CD/DVD-ROM if you CANT get a internet connect AFTER you install XP.
Ihave listed where to get these drivers for running XP on a dv2000 series notebook at the bottom of this post! (Note: If you know what your doing, just get the drivers that will make your internet work after installing XP (modem driver etc) you can get the rest later. If you dont have a high Gb flash drive or dont want to use up floppy's, you can do this to).
STEP5) Download and install osl2000.exe. This is a trial version (register for long term use) boot-manager that allows you to boot XP from the CD/DVD-ROM drive.
-- On the dv2202tu Vista tried to ingore the XP disc and not let me install XP over it or even install it on a partition Hmmmmmmm VISTA!!!!
-- But osl2000 solved that.....just press a key when told to 'Boot from CD' while starting your notebook.
-- You can do this NOW if you are sure you can access the internet after installing XP over vista (I did, I used a self installing USB Satilite internet connection (Maxon USB card). It installed fine after I booted XP over vista).
STEP6) Install XP !!!
-If you have used a floppy/USB flash drive for XP SATA drivers place it in its drive now !!!
-Also place your Windows XP CD/DVD-ROM in its drive and RE-BOOT your notebook.
**** Again, if you need them, make sure you have got a copy of all the drivers needed for later (link at bottom) & have Vista recovery disc's made. I didnt use either thou! eek *****
**** NOTES ON INSTALL ****
-- IF NEEDED : Press 'F6' to load SATA XP drivers. Then Press 'S' to use external drive (read package txt)
-- WHEN ASKED : Delete ALL partions and Format Hard Drive or Format & Install on Vista Partition
-- WHEN ASKED : Delete ALL partions and Format Hard Drive or Format & Install on Vista Partition
**** This is where XP installs, Just follow the on screen instructions!!! Enjoy!! *****
Step 7) After XP has installed (mine did with no problems) Install your internet connection and download the drivers you WILL need. (Unless you already did). Then simply install all the drivers from your flash drive/disc's!!!! .....................AND THATS IT!!!!
If you want, you can install the SATA drivers now if you were able to disable SATA in BIOS and didnt have to install SATA drivers when Installing XP. I havent yet, notebook seems to work fine and fast without SATA enabled.
Everything should work, if you have problems, look in DEVICE MANAGER to see what is not working. Then type in Google etc. something like this....'HP Pavilion dv2202tu erthernet driver'. It should provide a link to a Official HP website download!!
If you still have problems then I suggest you post on this Forum, I havent had any problems so cant really
help you with them!!!

GO HERE:
If these files dont work, to a internet search for your notebook model number and the driver name. Look in your CONTROL PANEL--> SYSTEM--> DEVICEMANAGER menu for things not working.
You should also be able to update the drivers with exact ones after these drivers.
These Generic drivers *should* at least make Windows recognise the Hardware/Devices allowing you to then update their drivers using windows ot 3rd party driver update software !!

tnx a lot.
im from the ph my friends also ask this same type of questions.
im from the ph my friends also ask this same type of questions.
but my question would be, why would anyone want to do this? xp is at the end of it's life, and windows7 is a form of vista. xp programs can be ran in vista, vista is three times faster than xp and has an ungodly amount of built in's that make add-ons insignificant if not useless. i'm usually pretty good at figuring everything out, i think i need someone who has actually used and understands both operating systems to give me an answer. i don't really need an answer, i'm just bored and looking out the window...
Oz, I think it keeps people busy - running into the wrong direction. They probably don't want to learn something new. It may be different for a business where education of something new is a cost and investment. But for a private party it is just plain lethargy - and yet they spend hours of grief twisting the thing. Look at the topics (in the forum statistics) that have had the most posts and views on this Forum - they are mostly about dual booting. What a waste of energy!
that's funny, whs. when i learned vista, it took all of one evening, i was blown away, i could have been on the mojave commercial. that was before sp1, also. other than 'a game doesn't work', i really don't see the reason to use XP. i'm just curious why people go back to it. i do laugh when i see a screen shot of an XP system and think what a dinosaur it is. i'm not trying to restart the OS argument, i'm just curious if there's really a valid reason.

@whs and @0z,
I think your postings contains the answer I.E. (Cost and Investment).
For instance on a personal level, for me to make (3) New Builds Plus obtain a Volume License of Vista, the cash out lay would be extremely prohibited by my Finance Minster. I could piece meal a network together but there again, it would just be cobbled together with different H/W components and O/ses). Also, the old 'Junk Room' is fast running out of spare parts which one must always have on hand and does cost extra dollars.
Don't know if you followed US congress 'bailout' vote today, but times are pretty 'rough' for most US consumers now so luxuries and new purchases are the first thing that they cut back on including myself.
As always, I DO respect your opinions as they are always very wise.
Kindest Regards,
Rick P. ♥ :)

rick, i've been watching that for a while now. everything on my youtube channel (lol) is geared towards it. but the OS question wasnt to start anything, i was just curious as to why they down grade.
@0z,
Oh I know. (LOL) (LOL)
You are one of my favorites over there in South Macon :) :)
I grew up in Bigspring Texas but have lived in most Western, Mid-West, Southern and Mid-Atlantic states.
When I use to fly, flew into Airports in all states. (LOL) (LOL)
How is that Ubuntu Distro machine running ??

Rick, I think your situation is completely valid and beyond any doubt. I think the situation that Oz and I were discussing was regarding people that buy a Vista system (because that's all they offer these days) and then try to retrofit that to XP - with all the troubles that we have seen. That was one of the reasons I had started this Compatibility Thread so that people would not be stuck with their XP programs not knowing what to do. But it does not seem to help a lot.
the new build is running great. i want to do another one. i think i'll order a new box so it would match all the new stuff i installed. but it was the box i found that got me started doing it. the best part is if i mess something up i just throw the cd back in.
@whs,
I DO appreciate your understanding.
@0z,
Know what you mean.
I'm going to have to do a Clean Install on my friend's machine on my bench but have put it off for (3) days because I just don't want to hear the 'guff' from MS when I have to manually PA using my X10 software. I'm so tired of hearing that one more time 'warning' on the phone from the MS folks, it just makes me ill.

I'm trying to install Drivers for a Compaq (HP) Presario 700 in XP, I can't seem to find any drivers anywhere for it. I've looked at nodevice.com the manufacturer website, the Vista CD etc.. I was able to install XP alright, it just didn't have any drivers installed at all. No SoundCard, no Video, No Network, etc.. Any ideas?
Thanks
Jordash. Could you start your own thread with that question, please.
What about here.
